finsterlation

finsterlation - on-site acoustic installation - berlin 2007
a.k.a. isolationsraum / isolation room

Texts, Sounds, Building, Design: Anja Kerschkewicz and Florian Kühnle.

Finsterlation is an installation using an artificial interrogation room. A visitor to the completely dark room takes seat on a single chair, puts on the headphones and starts to listen. With the sounds he hears, steps, music, laughing people, knocking on the walls, it is not distinguishable whether they are coming from the headphones or really from outside the room. The fragmented story he hears revolves around a person in a room, listening to sounds coming from somewhere outside, trying to get some orientation about where he is, what's outside, what happened... While the visitors' eyes adapt to the pitchblack darkness in the room, the chair under the listeners’ back eventually begins to shake.

Isolated spatially as well as acoustically inside the room, the visitor falls into a mood of self-reflexion, hearing an associative story loosely connected to the situation he himself is in, and to the people surrounding the artificial room he has been entering.

about

Anja Kerschkewicz and me developed and built this installation in October 2007. The audible content was created on site specific, as we recorded and edit in the set-up room on site. It would be iterested to try out the installation in other places and situations.

A stereo version of the acoustical events can be listened to below. The track should be listened to on headphones since the realistic impression of the sounds rely on it.
